The way I used to differentiate a male cow from a female cow is through horns – if it has horns, it’s a male. But someone told me that’s not correct. Can female cows have horns?

Actually, both bulls and cows can have horns naturally.
Cows are prey animals, and their horns are their only means of defense. Although they’ve been domesticated for quite a while now, they can still have them naturally (unless dehorned or specifically bred).
The cows we see are mostly for dairy, and the farmers usually opt for cows that are specifically bred to not have horns or to dehorn them as calves – this is to make them safer both for the other cows and the farmers.
