Crawling in minecraft is an anti-suffocation feature that was introduced in patch 1.14. So how do you do it? First things first, everything about crawling is very dependent on your environment, there is no button for you to click to activate this feature. You have to be in the right situation to actually do it.

In order to crawl, a certain state has to be initiated by the player. You have to be in a position that results in the player’s head to touch a block. Please note that this block has to be smaller than 1.5 blocks so that you can activate this feature.

EXAMPLE SITUATIONS THAT CAN ACTIVATE THE CRAWL FEATURE

The crawl feature in Minecraft is a new feature that appeared in Spring 2020. Interestingly enough, it was not an actual feature made to be released but an accidental code by Minecraft developers.

This is why its not a click-to-use feature. This is also why it can only be triggered in certain specific situations. Here are a few of those situations that will trigger the crawl feature on Minecraft. Please note that these situations are all in accordance with the trigger condition, that is, the has to be a small block on top of the player’s head.

    • Having a trapdoor close on top of the player. In this instance, the trapdoor acts as the small block on top of the player’s head and activates the trigger. While inside the trap, the player can now view themselves crawling.
    • A fence gate would be closing, however, at the same time, it is viewed by the game to be in the same altitude as the player’s head. This is an interesting scenario but it will trigger the feature and the player will be crawling.
    • The use of the piston to manually push the block onto the player’s head. Seeing as a piston is a sort of block moving truck, it will push the blocks. And if you aim it just right, it will trigger the crawling feature and there you have it folks, code development at its finest.
    • Not only can you use blocks and tools to trigger the crawling feature, you can also have situations where you could be exiting the swimming mode and while at the exit state, you could be in a space that is one-block high. This will immediately trigger the feature and the player will be able to crawl.
    • Another mode through which you can access the crawl feature is the elytra mode. While exiting elytra mode, which is only available in Survival mode, if you exit onto a space that is simply one-block high, you are quite capable of crawling. It is within the conditions that the player is capable of crawling.
    • A much funnier way to test your observations with this tempting hypothesis is by having a tree grow on the player. There are six types of tress on Minecraft, so pick the one you want to be your favorite test subject and let it be the pet you always wanted, to bark for you. Get it?
    • Moving on swiftly, you could also use a shulker box to shove the player in a downwards motion. Remember that the block must be shorter than 1.5 blocks. In normal conditions while doing this, the player would sneak. However, if it is in the face of a shorter block, the player will crawl. This is because the conditions fit for crawling and not sneaking.
    • Interestingly enough, if you dismount from s pig, with a saddle. The saddle is one of the important conditions for h to work. When you dismount onto a space that includes a shorter block, you will ultimately crawl.
    • Lastly, an interesting way to see the fruits of your labor, would be to put a boat on top of the head of the player. However, it is recommended to use honey blocks seeing as you can get the same result and they are easier to deal with.
    •

GETTING OUT OF YOUR OWN HEAD

However, the question is, you have crawled your way into these situations. All by your wholesome self. So how do you get out?

The answer lies in your head. Literally, you head in, so it is only logical that you must head out. If one of the conditions, specifically the condition whereby you have a specific block on top of the player’s head, then you will no longer crawl.

If there is space on top of the player’s head, then the trigger condition is not met and the player will now stand. It is simply a change of state through the fulfillment or unfulfillment of conditions, induced by certain and very specific triggers.

In the case that you get yourself in these situations, getting out is easy.
