It’s my first time checking engine oil myself. Should I check the oil hot or cold?

It’s good that you’re trying to learn to do this yourself.
You can check engine oil when it’s warm (around 15 minutes after it was running) so the oil can go down into the oil pan, and so the engine is not too hot that your burn yourself, but you can also check it when it’s cold. Also, make sure the car is parked on level ground. Good luck!
