We froze a turkey whole. We only want to cook a portion of it but have to thaw the whole thing to cut and then refreeze the rest. Is that a bad idea? Can you refreeze turkey?

Depends.
If you thawed the turkey in the refrigerator and kept it there after being thawed, then yes – you can refreeze turkey. You can even leave the turkey in the refrigerator for up to 3 days before you need to refreeze it again.
If you thawed the turkey by putting it in cold water or through a microwave, you should cook it immediately as the turkey has most probably been warmed to the point where harmful bacteria can begin to grow and multiply – at that point, only cooking will destroy those bacteria.
