I was gardening and randomly thought, what even is soil? Is it just piles of decomposed materials?

Soil is a complex mixture of weathered rocks, mineral particles, gas, water, organic materials, decaying matters, and living organisms. All of these contribute to the loose thin layer on the Earth’s surface. These materials are constantly interacting with each other to provide water and nutrients to plants and support a wide range of biotic communities.
