I just learned that humans existed less than 1 percent of the entire history of the Earth, and I’m trying to visualize how many years that is. What is 1 percent of 1 billion?

Getting 1% of something means either dividing it by 100 or multiplying by 1/100 because 1% means “one per one-hundred.”
So,
If we use multiplication:
1,000,000,000
x 0.01
= 10,000,000
If we use divisiion:
1,000,000,000
÷ 100
= 10,000,000
Therefore, 1% of 1,000,000,000 (1 billion) is 10,000,000 (10 million)
