I read this phrase somewhere and didn’t get it. What does “if it bleeds, it leads” mean?

You can take it quite literally. “If it bleeds, it leads” means if there’s blood, it gets more attention.
To expound, that expression is used to refer to how the media uses fear and shows violence or death to get viewers. The more brutal the story is, the higher the viewer ratings.
