I’m planning on getting a spider web drawing of a friend tattooed, but since I’m choosing it based on its art and size, I’m not sure of its meaning. Do spider web tattoos stand for anything?

A spider web tattoo can mean several things.
Arguably, it’s most known as a prison tattoo. It served as a symbol of serving time behind bars in the 1970s and 1980s and was popular as such for decades.
It also stood as a symbol of white supremacy groups – which is even darker than the previous meaning. White supremacy groups had rules when it came to the spider web tattoo – they would be inked on the elbows to symbolize loyalty and some groups would even require a murder of a minority before you could wear such a tattoo.
For Native Americans, a spider web tattoo is associated with a Native American character called Spider-Woman. Spider-Woman would weave spider webs over the cradleboards of all newborns, protecting them from all that is bad – so for them, a spider web tattoo means protection.
Other meanings and symbols are associated with the tattoo.
Incarceration
Death
Beauty
Design
Magic
Protection
Safety
Prison
Radical
White Supremacy
Evil
Creativity
These days, your tattoo’s meaning would depend on you, but it’s still a good idea to know what they can symbolize.
