I’m still getting confused with this 🙁 I know it is simple, but I’m not a native speaker, so it just doesn’t come naturally to me.
“There were” or “there was”? When do you use “was’ and “were”?
“Was” is used in the first and third-person singular past (I, he, she, it).
“Were” is used in the second-person singular and plural and first and third-person plural. (you, your, yours, we, they).
But what about “If I Were A Boy” by Beyoncé – is that written wrong?
No. There’s this thing called subjunctive mood. It is a verb form that is used for unreal or hypothetical statements, for that use “were.”
Example:
If I were better at cooking, I’d cook every day.
The bag I bought is nice, but I wish it were a different color.
If you’re stating a fact and describing reality, then use was.
Example:
When I was in college, I slept in class a lot.
My friend was an honor student in grade school.
