I complimented someone’s “dreads,” and they corrected me and told me to call them “locs.” I just want to avoid the same mistake. What’s the difference between locs and dreads?
They’re the same hairstyle. The only difference is the negative connotation that surrounds the word “dreadlocs” or “dreads.” Some people may feel offended when you call their hair “dreadlocs” because it implies that their hair is dreadful. I also read the slave masters used “dreadful” to describe the black person’s hair that had locked naturally due to lack of proper grooming.
Though some cultures prefer to refer to it as “dreadlocs” because to them, the word “dread” means respect, the safe bet would be just calling it locs or locks.
