Someone told me it is, and I just want to confirm. I’ve always thought it was a work of fiction. Is Romeo and Juliet a true story?

There’s no actual Romeo and Juliet, but some say it is based on the story of two real lovers in 1303.
Some say only the families, the Montagues, and the Capulets, are real but the story isn’t.
Some say the story is real and Shakespeare came to know about it from Arthur Brooke’s 1562 poem entitled The Tragical History of Romeus and Juliet and made his version of it.
See, the thing is, there are several other pieces of literature that have a similar plot to Romeo and Juliet, and that means at least some parts of the story are real – may it be the actual story, the characters, or the families.
