I’m reading a book that mentions shillings, and I think knowing how much a shilling is in today’s money would help me appreciate what I’m reading more.

I’m guessing you mean British shillings because they’re the ones no longer in use now. British shillings were phased out starting in 1971 to give way to pence. Kenya, Somalia, Tanzania, and Uganda still use shilling to refer to their respective currencies – all of which would be less than a penny in American dollars.
Back to British shillings, exchange rates vary over time, but when it was in use, a shilling is equal to 5 pence so, when converted, it’ll be around 6 to 7 US cents depending on the exchange rate.
