Someone told me that this was a thing, but I didn’t retain the details on how to do it. How can you tell if gold is real using a lighter?
Here’s how:
1. Hang the pieces you want to test in a space where it’s safe to use fire and without anything flammable around it.
2. Choose a lighter that can give you constant flame. Don’t use anything stronger than a lighter because you can melt and damage your piece even if it’s pure gold. If your piece is made out of metals that darken with heat, then you’ll ruin it inevitably, lol.
3. Apply flame to the gold piece you want to test.
If it gets brighter, it’s real gold.
If it darkens, it’s fake gold.
Just fire away at the gold piece you want to test, basically.
If the gold melts and you see a different material, it’s a gold-plated piece. If the gold darkens in color, it’s not gold or not purely gold. If it gets brighter, it’s pure gold.
