By Merriam-Webster definition, a celebrity is “a famous or celebrated person.”
These days people celebrate our health care workers, but they aren’t famous – my point is, aside from the fact that no one keeps track of all the famous people in the world, being a “celebrity” is pretty vague.
That being said, Samuel Arbesman, a mathematician, computed in 2013 that 0.0086 of humans is famous or a “celebrity.” He used a number of notable people he found and the global population by that time to get that number.
If we were to use that percentage to our population as of this writing (7.9 B), we’ll get 67,940,000.
In conclusion, there are many celebrities – tens of millions. If we would add internet celebrities, then maybe even hundreds of millions.
