I’m trying to impress my Mexican partner by cooking Tamales. I just know that it takes a long time but, how long do you steam Tamales?

There’s no particular cooking time for tamales. The cooking time will depend on the recipe you’re using.
It may be anywhere from 30 minutes to 4 hours. Most recommend around 1 hour and 30 minutes.
Checking the doneness at around 30 minutes by lightly pulling on a corn husk will certainly help. If you can see a masa stuck on the corn husk, it’s not done yet, but if the corn husk is clean (no masa on it) then your tamales are done.
It’s better to aim for a little bit undercooked than overcooked if you’re not sure because, for an undercooked tamale, you can always just put them back to steam for another 5 minutes or so.
