I have an online friend that calls himself “Ned,” and I want to tease him by (hopefully) calling him by his real name. He said, “Ned” is his actual nickname so, what is “Ned” short for?

Ned is short for Edward, Edmund, Edmond, Edgar, Edwin, or Eddard (usually)
Names that started with “-Ed” became “Ned” because of the medieval affectionate phrase “mine” added before the names.
The final consonance of “mine” got carried to the names.
Basically,
“Mine Edgar” → “Mine Ed” → “My Ned” → “Ned”
This made it easier to pronounce the names and added more intimacy to them.
