When someone says a show has a “cold open,” what do they mean? What is a “cold open”?

Cold open is a technique used in the opening of shows and films (thus the name) where they jump into a scene before they even show the title card or opening credits.
Do you watch Brooklyn Nine-Nine? It’s that thing they do where they put a scene right at the beginning, even before they show the title.
