Came across this phrase on something I’m reading and didn’t get it. When someone says, “time is a social construct,” what do they mean?
A “social construct” is an idea that exists only because human society agrees that it does.
Time is a social construct because humans just agreed and standardized time.
Other examples of social construct are:
Class distinctions (we’re all just human)
Countries (we created the borders on Earth)
Well, based on the definition of “social construct,” we can say that time is indeed a social construct. But, some would argue that it isn’t because time will run whether society agrees with it or not.
