When I email a professor, he changes the subject and adds “Re:” – I just go with it, but I actually don’t know why he does that lol what does “Re:” mean in email?
“Re” is actually a word and not an abbreviation of anything. By Oxford Languages definition, it is “in the matter of (used typically as the first word in the heading of an official document or to introduce a reference in an official letter).” or “about; concerning.”
And it’s used just as its meaning – it’s used to state what the message is about.
Some people think of it as an abbreviation of “reply,” “response,” or “regarding” – and although that is wrong since it is not an abbreviation of those words, it fits because that is essentially its meaning. So, if anyone answers that “Re” is an abbreviation for “reply,” they failed the task successfully lol
