I was reading the news and found out that a member of the famous heavy metal band Slipknot recently died. One commenter said that it’s the “end of an era”. What does “end of an era” mean?

Era, by definition, is a long and distinct period of history with a particular feature or characteristic. So “end of an era” basically means it’s the end of a period of time that is special – we can assume that to that commenter, the special thing was the complete Slipknot band. Hope this helps!
