What does “be still my heart” means and when would you use this phrase? I’d appreciate it if you can give me an example. I’m studying English and although I am good at it, I want to make sure the words and phrases I use are as natural as possible. Thank you.
“be still my heart” basically means “calm down”.
It’s used when there’s something that’s too heart racing or exciting.
You can use it as its definition implies, but these days it is used rather sarcastically to imply that the situation isn’t that exciting.
Examples:
If something is exciting:
“Oh, be still my heart, that cute dog just did a trick!!”
If being sarcastic:
“Ah, You gave me ballpen for our 20th anniversary? Oh, be still my heart! No, thank you.”
