This came up in a conversation with friends, and we realized we don’t know what pool balls are made of. They’re pretty solid. What are they made of?

They were originally made of ivory. These days, the better quality pool balls are made from a chemical compound called Bakelite or cast phenolic resin. Which are thermo-setting materials, which means they can’t be melted down and used again (so manufacturers try not to use them anymore.) The lower-quality ones could be made out of acrylic and/or polyester.
