I find it hard to find my way in buildings with North, East, West, South wings and get really confused when people say Northeast of this, South to that. Is there a way to tell which direction you’re facing?

If you’re trying to determine your location by sunrise or sunset, you can rely on the sun.
The sun rises in the east and sets in the West.
If your right arm is facing the sunrise, you’re facing North, behind you will be South, and that leaves your left side to be West. Just reverse this by sunset.
If you can find a Christian church where you are, that can help. They’re typically aligned west-east with the altar at the east. Most buildings have a church or a chapel, so maybe you can use those to visualize the directions.
