I know you can’t put big things that are made of steel in the microwave but is aluminum foil okay? I just thought it’s thin, and it’s made to cover food anyway.

You can, but you shouldn’t. Even though aluminum is thin, it’s still metal. The microwaves the appliance produces are supposed to be reflected by the metal interior of the oven – those produce heat and are absorbed by the food. If you put another metal inside the oven aside from the metal interior, the microwaves get reflected back and forth. And, if there isn’t enough material in the oven to absorb the heat from those metals or if the metal is too thin like an aluminum sheet, those metals will heat up and ruin your appliance. An aluminum sheet specifically will not be able to withstand the microwaves and will ignite. If the aluminum is crinkled into sharp edges, the current will even produce sparks and those can start a fire.
I completely agree with Hilda but, I also want to add that you can actually use a small piece of aluminum foil or sheet in a microwave oven. Again, metals like aluminum will reflect the microwaves aka heat instead of absorbing them. That said, if you want to shield some parts of your food so they don’t burn, you can use a little bit of aluminum to cover them – say, the tip of a chicken wing or lollipop. Just make sure there’s an ample amount of food inside the oven to absorb the heat so your aluminum foil doesn’t heat up and ignite.
Basically, just like how you can technically put cardboard in an oven, you can also technically put aluminum foil in a microwave oven, but you just have to be sure that the conditions for safe usage are met so you don’t end up with a kitchen disaster
